Jawa 250 Special from 1935. Weight: 95 kg. 1-cylinder 248cc engine, 9 HP. Maximum speed: 100 kph.

[img]JAWA Moto was founded in Prague by František Janeček, the owner of armament industry firm „Zbrojovka”, who bought the motorcycle division of Wanderer in 1929. The name JAWA was established by concatenating the first letters of Janeček and Wanderer. The first model was introduced in October 1929. This was a 500 cc 4-cycle engine with power output 18 hp and fuel consumption of 6 liters per 100 km. Although priced highly, through the first years (and several constructional fixes) the motorcycle was quite successful. In 1930 English engineer George Patchett started to work for Jawa Moto. In 30s he constructed for Jawa many succesful models, using licensed Villers and Wanderer engines and engines of his own design, as well. Most popular was Jawa 175 with 2-stroke Villers engine, introduced in 1932. This light (70 kg) machine was capable of speeds up to 80 kph and fuel consumption of 3.5 liters per 100 km. It was a great success and soon other models followed: Jawa Special 175 in 1933, Java 350 SV in 1934 (in this year Janeček marketed his first car, too), and in 1935 – Java 350 OHV and Java 250 Special.

WW2 ended this first chapter of Jawa history. Patchett had to return to England, when the war broke out, and in 1941 Janeček died. After war Jawa company was nationalised and became main motorcycle manufacturer in Czech Republic.
